The grid refers to the marked starting positions on the track where cars line up before the race. The order is generally determined by qualifying results, with F1 cars arranged in a staggered formation. A stronger grid position can provide an important advantage in the run to the first corner.

A reconnaissance lap is completed before the cars assemble on the starting grid, but it is more than a simple trip to the grid. It gives the driver a final opportunity to assess grip, track conditions and any wet sections from inside the car. This information can be especially useful when the weather is uncertain. If a driver completes more than one reconnaissance lap, the additional laps must pass through the pit lane rather than through the grid.
The reconnaissance lap is directly connected to the pre-race procedure of assembling the cars on the starting grid.
